Members of the Board of
Directors from Texas Colonial Foundation for Youth convened a few days
ago in order to select from a group of finalist, twelve scholarship
winners.
Mr.
John Saavedra CE, local businessman, Mr. Richard Farias, Director of
Tejano Center for Community Concerns, and Mr. Marcello Marini,
Director of Programming & Community Affairs at Telemundo-Channel
48 administered scholarship selection for 8 hours electing 10 winners
from 230 applicants for 2001. Each scholarship of
$2,500.00 will be given to the scholarship winner’s college
or university of their choice. Scholarships will be handed from our
finest state and city officials such as: Secretary of State of Texas,
Honorable Henry Cuellar and Mayor from the City of Houston, Dr. Lee P.
Brown, & State Representative, Rick Noriega to name a few.
Secretary of State, Henry Cuellar will also be the ceremony’s
keynote speaker. These 10 scholarship winners and also two winners
from last year will receive special certificates for all their
extraordinary hard work for the past four years. Parents and guardians
of these 12 scholarship winners will be mentioned and praised for
their wonderful support and encouragement in the lives of these youth.
The
ceremony will take place in the prestigious Omni Hotel on May 11, 2001
from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Omni Hotel is located in the galleria
area on 4 Riverway with Woodway as the cross street. For more

2001
SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
This
year’s winners are 12 in total, 10 for this year and 2 previous
winners from last year. The idea for last year’s winners is there
constant progress and maintaining a 4.0 average in their college or
university. With the strong grade point average, Texas Colonial
Foundation for Youth is proud to support these hard working college
students who are in pursuit of better education and the completion of
their degree program.
Last
years scholarship winners are Irma Salazar, in her second year is
majoring in Business Administration at the University of Houston.
Santiago Castillo is majoring in Engineering at the University of
Texas in Austin. Presenting this year’s Texas Colonial Scholarship
Foundation for Youth winners: Deisy Garcia (Raul Yzaguirre School for
Success) Major: Engineering, Chantel Aguirre (Raul Yzaguirre School
for Success) Major: Bilingual Education, Ana-Elena Hernandez, (DeBakey
High School for Health Professions) Major: Speech Therapy, Mared
Jimenez (Westfield High School) Double Major: Political Science &
International Business, Maria Zapata (Phillies Wheatley High) Major:
Law, Veronica Chavez (Barbara Jordan High School) Double Major:
Bilingual Studies & Education, Gladys Zovelly Garcia (Milby High
School) Major: Business Administration, Rodolfo Salazar (Robert E. Lee
High School) Major: Civil Engineer, Dante Garcia (High School for Law
Enforcement) Major: Psychiatrist, and Carlos A. Chavez (Stafford High
School) Major: Pre-Med Biology.
